Peer Interactions:

Peer interaction is a chance for a learner to expand their ideas. This happens in two ways. First, an idea can be challenged forcing the learner to reexamine the idea in order defend the idea or find a flaw that needs to be fixed. Learners also get the chance to synthesize their ideas the thoughts of others.  I generally interacted with my peers by providing a different perspective on their thoughts or by sharing experiences applicable to their posts. I also wanted to be an encouraging and supportive classmate.

Dustin,

It is hard for the development of a craft that is seen as frivolous to make traction to being seen as legit when ‘news’ sources lead into their coverage of those crafts with belittling jokes, which focus the audience’s attention on the negativity attitudes. You are correct to question the validity of this story’s introduction even if it goes on to shine a positive light on the brewing program. It reminds me of the headlines I find searching for articles about comics and graphic novels that include campy dislodge or zany sound effects.

To Dustin Pettit (connecting problems of legitimacy between our focal themes):

Susan,

Thank you for your continued string of awesome digital story critiques. I agree with your thoughts that the sound editing on this digital story does a great job of supporting and the story and moving the narrative along, I was particularly interested in the use of voice over, music, and street sounds along with photographs to establish the story setting in Spanish Harlem.

Also thank you for linking to Runnin’! It has been an great sound track while writing this comment.

To Susan Laws (pointing out a strong thought and encouraging her to share more awesome stories):
To Logan Priess (suggesting a slightly different interpretation of what the author's objective was):

Logan,

I liked your thinking about the camping story you had read. If the author’s focus had been on the interactions between characters then the detailed elements of the natural setting may have been moved to the back burner. The author could also have been trying to reach an audience of experienced campers, who fill in the blanks of the environment from their own experience. Then the author can focus on sharing the interpersonal expedience of camping thought the story, which will motivate those experienced campers to go camping again.

Sara,

You have a very interesting and strong point in your scholarly response. I have been reading and thinking about narrative in digital stories this week and developing an understanding of how important the creation of compelling narrative is to producing a digital story. I would have said that the editing of stories or coaching of storytellers is for the best because it would leads to more compelling storytelling. But your argument about historical documents and letters has reminded me that half of an effective narrative is that the narrative is authentic.

Jennifer,
This article has some wonderful tips for producing engaging stories, thanks for sharing. I found it particularly useful as I am planning my own larger and more meaty digital story for our class. I think idea 3 about a joke or a twist every 8 seconds is good for me to remember - I always get ahead of myself and tell the end of the story to soon and ruin the punch line!

Mark,

I also do not quite understand how digital storytelling is going to introduced in the Lanshear and Knobel text. I have been thinking that New Literacies are in every niche of our modern world and those expressed though the virtual environment are a subcategory – the digital stories. I feel after the first two very generalized chapters we should start to have some more focused discussions coming up.

Wow what an amazing story! No wonder it was made into a documentary. The flow of the narrative of the story is supported so much by the order and how the events revealed to the reader. The author is able to build the tension in the story to give the reader a sense of the tension in Duffy's life. Also the attached videos of Duffy cooking and his dishes were a great touch to give the reader a visual understanding of where Duffy's journey took him.

Diane,

You make a good point about this resource. It seems like a great resource for education, a tool for students to create their own digital stories, but the video is not engaging. I would have used Creaza to create the tutorial, then the video would have highlighted the tools of Creaza and be an exemplar of the engaging projects that can be made with the program.
